Best Practices Make Perfect: Biz Journal
Fast 50 Diary, by Ed Stych
(exerpt)
Business owners often seek out "best practices" they can use to better manage and build their companies ... We asked some of the Minneapolis/St. Paul Business Journal's Fast 50 companies what best practices helped them grow.
The Nerdery
Headquarters: Bloomington
Business: Partners with advertisers, marketers, designers and others to build websites and social media tools
Answering: Mike Derheim, CEO
Best practice: "We are uniquely good at bringing smart people together, and listening to them is a secret to our success. We’ve developed many ways of harnessing the collective brainpower of our army of nerds. We have an internal forum for any employee to share their ideas about how to make the company better (even anonymously). We hold a monthly town hall style meeting called the Mind Meld where all of our staff gather to discuss a topic, share feedback on a current challenge or hear updates on an ongoing project."
Fun practice: "Our weekly shout-out video is an ongoing chance for people to publicly recognize each other’s nerdy deeds. It’s Nerd cred on film."
