Biz Journal names Mike Derheim to 40 Under 40 list
Nerdery CEO Mike Derheim was today named to Minneapolis-St. Paul Business Journal’s annual 40 Under 40 list. “Yeah, but did I make the top ten?” said the amiably-competitive leader of Nerds when reached for comment.
“Mike’s drive, attitude and pursuit of excellence is inspiring to me and our team,” said Tom O’Neill, chief strategy officer at The Nerdery. “He has a unique ability to identify the strengths of his team members and to maximize those strengths toward success.”
“Following the tragic loss of his friend and business partner Luke Bucklin, Mike has transformed himself from a behind-the-scenes fixer to a highly visible, charismatic leader who’s actively engaged in setting the direction for a vibrant, growing company,” said Nerdery VP of marketing Mark Hurlburt. “Not many people can be effective in either of those roles, but Mike has excelled at both.”

Derheim formed the company in 2003 with co-founders Mike Schmidt and Luke Bucklin. Previously, Mike’s extensive background in Internet technology began as an interactive developer for Infinetivity in 1997. He is an expert in multiple database applications and programming environments. Under Mike’s leadership, The Nerdery has become an Inc. 5000 company and made the Minneapolis St. Paul Business Journal’s Fast 50 list – both leading benchmarks of fast-growing private companies. When he was CFO of The Nerdery, Minneapolis-St. Paul Business Journal recognized Mike as a CFO of the Year Finalist in 2011. Mike was also honored as a Minnesotan on the Move in 2012 in a special edition published by Minneapolis Finance & Commerce. Among all individual and corporate awards, Mike is most proud of The Nerdery’s #1 ranking in 2011 and 2012 on the Best Places to Work list published by Minneapolis-St. Paul Business Journal.
